New ipad pro & pencil, 100% charged. Using on Notes, get no writing or colors, just a round circle or shadow appears
on occassion. What am I doing wrong?

Mine writes in the colors but won’t print in the colors. It’s a problem with the new IOS software.
Do you have a swiggly looking icon in the Notes App?
You need to tap that first before you can draw in Notes
In notes there is a squiggly line as MichelPM said click that then try and if not maybe your Apple Pencil is not connected to Bluetooth. Connect it to Bluetooth then it will work and if it doesn't take it to the Apple Store
Also, and I keep forgetting about this, make sure the tip of the Apple pencil is screwed on securely.
After reading a zillion tips, this one about securing the tip of the pencil was the answer that finally made the pencil work!
